Benchmark report

The state of group practice economics

Almost every published therapy benchmark is built on solo practitioners. Group owners carry payroll, rent, and supervision, then compare themselves to people who carry none of it. This is the group-only view, in ratios.

The benchmarks

What the numbers look like by practice size

Ratios only. No dollar amounts, no practice names, and never any patient data. A number appears only once enough comparable practices sit behind it to publish it fairly. Today the table is an illustrative synthetic seed: constructed rows that show the shape of the benchmark, not contributed data. Real contributed numbers replace it as practices share theirs.

Size band: 4-6 clinicians · illustrative synthetic seed, not contributed data
MetricMedianTypical range (25–75%)
Pay-to-revenue (comp ratio)
Share of clinician revenue that goes to clinician pay. Lower leaves more for overhead and the owner.
63%56%–69%
Practice net margin
What the whole practice keeps after all costs, as a share of revenue. Practice net margin, not a per-clinician figure.
12%8%–16%
Utilization vs. target
How full clinicians' schedules run against their target clinical hours.

How we built this

Every saved Snapshot can contribute one anonymized row to this corpus: a size band and a handful of dimensionless ratios. No names, no dollar amounts, no patient data, no way back to a practice.

A figure is withheld until its size band clears a small-cell privacy floor, the same standard health agencies use, so no number here can be traced to a few specific practices. Quartiles need a larger band still. This is why some cells read “—”: the data is there, but not yet enough of it to publish fairly.

Figures are planning benchmarks, not accounting. Until the contributed corpus clears the privacy floor, the table above shows the labeled synthetic seed; once it does, the numbers on this page come from the contributed corpus. The wider public-data context behind the group-economics picture (rates, comp models, turnover, owner pay) is sourced and cited in the companion narrative.
